The Galata Maritime museum in Porto Antico, with its 10,000 m2 housed in a stone and crystal building, the work of the Spanish architect Guillermo Vasquéz Consuegra, is the largest and most innovative maritime museum in the Mediterranean, dedicated to the evolution of the port and of the city.
In addition to the scientific approach, the museum complex also gives ample space to multimedia and interactive aspects. One of the jewels of the Museum is the faithful reconstruction of a 17th century Genoese galley (40 meters long) located in its original slipway.
The visitor is led through more traditional rooms (on Cristoforo Colombo, Andrea Doria, on nautical charts and scientific instruments), but can also explore the rooms of the Arsenale, visit the armory of the Darsena, leaf through precious sixteenth-century atlases, get on a nineteenth-century brig until going through a storm at Cape Horn.
The third floor of the Galata Museo del Mare hosts the new pavilion MeM – Memory and Migrations, dedicated to the issues of Italian emigrants in the two Americas in the last century. Through 40 multimedia stations and environmental reconstructions, the stages of the various destinations are retraced: from Boca, the colorful neighborhood of Buenos Aires, to the forests of Brazil, ending in the best known, Ellis Island.
The last section, for the first time in a permanent institutional and cultural venue, is dedicated to the problems of new immigrants in Italy with one of the boats landing in Lampedusa on display.
To highlight the panoramic terrace, MIRA Genova. Inside the Galata Open Air Museum, an open-air museum with photographic panels and ancient cranes, there is the Nazario Sauro submarine, the largest Italian submarine that has become the first museum ship in Italy that can be visited in the water, an integral part of the museum itinerary.
